CBD and Motion Sickness

Motion sickness, also known as Kinetose, is usually seen in people when travelling, for example by train, car, ship or aeroplane. The person affected develops symptoms such as nausea or even vomiting.

Depending on the means of transport, there are different names for the illness. If you feel ill when travelling by car, bus or train, experts simply call this motion sickness. If, on the other hand, you are travelling by ship, it is known as sea sickness, and if the illness should occur when flying it is called air sickness

Every person basically can suffer from motion sickness. Interestingly, infants are never affected. However, once this stage of development is over, a very vulnerable age is reached. It has been found that children aged between 2 and 12 years old are particularly frequently affected by motion sickness. This vulnerability can be increased by fear as well as stress.  Both of these are triggers which can be alleviated by taking CBD oil when suffering from motion sickness, or in the case of adults by using CBD liquid via an E-cigarette.

Causes of Motion Sickness

Feeling queasy, nauseous and actually vomiting when suffering from motion sickness emanate from the ear. Inside the ear the organ of equilibrium can be found. It is divided into three arches and the macular organ. It is via this organ that the brain receives information about position and movement of the entire body regarding the spatial environment.

Movement and acceleration can disrupt this system. These disruptions mainly occur as a result of the discrepancy between the perception  of the organ of equilibrium regarding change of position and information which the brain receives via the eye. In a ship cabin, for example, the eye perceives a fixed, non-moving room whilst the organ of equilibrium registers the rocking of the ship. Via the involuntarily controlled autonomic nervous system, there is an irritation, which amongst other things, triggers sea sickness. Nausea is frequently the result. There are some medical professionals who also view the hormone ADH as the cause of motion sickness.

Signs that a person is suffering from motion sickness are, in addition to vomiting, sweating, headaches, shivering, dizziness, as well as a noticeable increase in the pulse rate. CBD can be of help with motion sickness by, for example, having a calming effect.

How remedies work against Motion Sickness

Motion sickness is basically either treated using medication or by so-called empirical household remedies.

Medication against motion sickness exists in many different forms of administration, such as tablets, chewing gum, suppositories, capsules, plasters or injections. Specialists classify the ingredients as anti-histamines or parasympatholytics.  Parasympatholytics affect the parasympathicus, a part of the autonomic nervous system, which is thereby inhibited. It is important to mention that the medication usually has a dulling effect, therefore considerably impeding the ability to drive whilst travelling.

It is well-known that one empirically formulated household remedy states that you should only start a journey if you are well-rested and at the first sign of motion sickness, you should stare at a fixed point or close your eyes. Facing the direction of travel is also supposed to help. When travelling by car, you also drive yourself instead of being a passenger. To calm their nerves, many people in the meantime take CBT if they feel travel sick. It does not cause drowsiness and according to current research, does not impact on the ability to drive.

CBD in the case of Motion sickness – How does Cannabidiol work?

Motion sickness is usually described by experts as a neurological illness. In this case, CBD as a non-psychoactive ingredient of the hemp plant is a good starting point to effectively counteract this.

Cannabidiol, which can be taken either as CBD oil or CBD liquid, can have a calming effect on the human nervous system. CBD is part of an effective cycle which, after ingestion, has a positive influence on the hormonal balance of the body via the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a component of the nervous system. This system thus regulates the release of the hormone ADH.

The relationship between motion sickness, CBD and the endocannabinoid system was researched in a study [1] in 2010. The results showed that both stress and motion sickness are associated with an impairment of ECS. The researchers concluded that CBD is an alternative treatment strategy for people affected by motion sickness.

The fact that CBD has a positive effect on motion sickness is illustrated in a study [2], which looked at the relationship between CBD and vomiting. According to the researchers, the effect of CBD against nausea manifests itself  by indirect activation of somatodendritic 5-HT1A receptors in the raphe nucleus. Preclinical studies have shown that CBD helps to treat nausea on the one hand and vomiting on the other.

As briefly mentioned above, anxiety can be an increasing factor in motion sickness. CBD can help here. To make it easier to cope with such fears, doctors usually give the affected person anxiolytic, i.e. an anxiety-relieving medication. According to a study [3]CBD has an anxiolytic effect on humans. It is often prescribed by doctors to people who suffer from fear of flying. According to the experts, CBD should be taken prophylactically in the case of fear of flying.

Motion sickness causes sleep disorders, among other things. CBD can be taken before going to bed during longer air or sea journeys, not only to make it easier to fall asleep, but also to ensure that sleep itself is calmer – this was confirmed by a study [4] from 2019. This has the advantage that you feel less affected by the illness due to sleeping longer rather than being awake.

  • Taking CBD against motion sickness is particularly effective in reducing stress and anxiety.
  • In addition, CBD has an equalising effect on the hormonal balance of ADH in the case of sea sickness via the ECS as part of the autonomic nervous system.
  • CBD Oil and CBD Liquid also help to reduce the effects of air sickness such as nausea and vomiting in advance.

When taking products containing cannabinoids, interactions with various drugs may occur under certain circumstances. If you are taking medication yourself, the use of CBD and other cannabinoids should be discussed with your doctor beforehand.
